IBM comes out with Hindi speech - recognition technology

A speech recognition technology in Hindi has been developed by IBM, to be called ‘Shrutlekhan-Rajbhasha’. The new technology would enable physically challenged and less literate Hindi speakers access information through a variety of applications.

IBM India Software Lab developed the Desktop Hindi speech Regognition Technology in colloboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced computing (C-DAC). It would provide an interface for human-computer interaction.

As explained by IBM India Research Laboratory Director Daniel Dias, the technology helps transcribe continuous speech in Hindi instantly into text form and could find use in a variety of applications such as voice enabled ATMs, car navigations systems, banking, telecom, railways and airlines. The system can recognise more than 7500 to enhance the accuracy further, there is a spell checker to correct spoken word errors.

There are lots of user friendly features integrated in the technology. For example, there is facility to convert text to digits and decimals, date and currency format, and into fonts which could be imported to any windows-based applications.

Dias said that IBM India belived in taking high-end research to the benefit of the masses and bridging the digital divide through a faster diffusion process.

The technology would also help C-DAC to ensure high level accuracy in Hindi translation in a host of domains that includes administration, finance, agriculture and small scale directory.
