Karunanidhi denied Jayalalithaa’s contention

February 7, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi denied the AIADMK general secretary J.Jayalalithaa’s contention that the water awarded to Tamil Nadu by the Cauvery Water disputes Tribunal in its final verdict was less than what was allocated in the interim award. The Cauvery Tribunal, in its interim award, ordered that Karnataka should release 205 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu

In a statement, the chief minister said as per the interim award of the tribunal, Karnataka had to give 205 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu of which nine tmcft should be apportioned to Puducherry. This means that Tamil Nadu has been allocated 199 tmcft of water in the interim award, the head of the government added.

The chief minister said, now the tribunal in its final verdict, had said that Karnataka should ensure 195 tmcft at Biligundulu. He said if the 25 tmcft of water to be received between Biligundulu and Mettur was added, Tamil Nadu would receive a total of 217 tmcft at Mettur and after giving nine tmcft to Puducherry, it would get 210 tmcft.

The head of the government asked how can the final verdict be described as lesser than the interim verdict, this being so.

Jayalalithaa had demanded that the verdict should be notified in the Union Gazette immediately. Chief minister M.Karunanidhi said that this showed Jayalalithaa’s contradictory stand on the issue.

Tamil Nadu chief minister said that the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa had wrongly understood his words. He said that the final verdict of the tribunal had come as a consolation to him and did not say it made him happy.
