On Tuesday, The Inspector general of Police (Crimes), Mr.R.Sekar said that the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) would modernise the department by providing it with latest gadgets like global positioning system (GPS) and night vision binoculars.

The new technology is expected to help the police to track the offenders and their locations. He said that the Global Positioning system would be used to track the movement of drug smugglers in dense forests and the night binoculars would help us locate the men working in such lantations from a distance during night. He said that they had planned to buy this equipment at a cost of 52 lakh.

Within the last 15 days, the NIB has destroyed over 5000 kg of ganja, which was growing in a three acre land. It also had destroyed other seized related worth Rs.15 crore in this year. He said that the NIB had booked 1086 cases and arrested 1101 persons. 12 of the arrested were detained under Goodas Act.

Mr.R.Sekar said that they had destroyed 2000 kg of ganja wroth around 50lakh, grown in one acre in Western Ghats valley in Madurai on December 9. In the current month of december, the NIB has so far arrested 25 persons in 24 cases in various narcotic cases. He also said that the drive against ganja would be intensified in the coming days.

On November, the NIB had arrested 90 persons in 89 cases and seized 181 kg of ganja. On November 25, the NIB had raided the Kottaimalai forest area and destroyed 3000 kg of ganja plants worth over Rs.75 lakh. On November 30, the team had destroyed ganja plants weighting around 150 kg in another raid.
