Drinking water Project
January 30, The foundation stone for the Rs.616 crore drinking water project in Ramanathapuram district was laid by the Tamil Nadu Chief minister M.Karunanidhi. This project is the biggest scheme in Asia. This drinking water project would provide to the needs of the people in three districts of Pudukottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram.
Mr.Karunanidhi said that this drinking water project involved laying an 840-kilometre pipeline from Trichy for water supply to the three districts. He said that he was very concerned about the water problem in Ramanathapuram district and their government had been solving this problem in a phased manner.
He also said that Ramanathapuram district had water problem even it had desilted lakes and ponds for storing water. Villagers in each of these districts would get 40 litres a day per head, those in town panchayats would get 70 litres and others in municipal areas would get 90 litres by this distilled water project.
Four tanks would be constructed under this scheme. From this tanks the water would be carried through pipelines to Alavai village. Then the water would be stored in 75 tanks in the three different districts before being transported to the municipalities and town panchayats.
The cheif minister said that the officials and workers would be rewarded by him if they completed this drinking water project in two years, as against the scheduled three years.
Chief secretary L.K. Tripathy spoke on the occasion. He described the project as Asia’s biggest drinking water project. He said that the state government was proud to take up such a huge distilled water project. The foundation stone for 22 new welfare works estimated to cost Rs 19.1 crore and inaugurated 13 projects completed at a cost of Rs. 418 crore in Ramanathapuram district were also laid by the chief minister.
