February 16, Three AIADMK activists were sentensed to death and 25 others to seven years imprisionment by a sessions court in Salem in the Dharmapuri bus burning case for killing three students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore during a protest against AIADMK leader Ms J. Jayalalithaa being convicted in a corruption case in 2000.

Three students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore, Kokilavani, Hemalatha and Gayatri, were charred to death when the vehicle was fired by the accused.

Initially, the case was heard by a court in Krishnagiri, then the case was transferred to Salem by the Madras High court during the previous AIADMK regime. The first additional sessions judge D.Krishna Raja fined 24 convicts Rs. 13,000 each and ordered one to pay Rs. 15,000 in the sensational Dharmapuri bus burning case.

The first additional sessions judge D.Krishna Raja ordered that the three accused Nedunchezhiyan, Ravichandran, C.Muniappan be hanged to death in the Dharmapuri bus burning case. D.Krishna Raja said that the murder of the three girls by torching their vehicle was the rarest of the rare case. He said that the extreme punishment was justified, besides it should serve as a warning others.

The three students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University at Coimbatore were charred to death and 18 others suffered burns in the bus burning incident. All the three accused were asked to pay Rs.59000 each in Dharmapuri vehicle torching case. Tight security arrangements were made in the court complex in view of the judgement.

DIG of crime branch, CID police, D.Rajendran said that the judgement in Dharmapuri bus burning case was a reward to the good work done by his team.

Sania moved into the prequarterfinals

February 14, Sania Mirza of India moved into the prequarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson International Bangalore WTA tournament event after winning her first round match against Slovak Martina Sucha. Defeating Martina Sucha 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Sony Ericsson International, Sania showed her improved strength.

The oppents for both Sania Mirza of India and Martina Sucha of Slovakia were the insects and moths swarming all over poor line calls and unforced errors. After sligging it out for over two hours, Sania carved out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory and entered the second round.

The tournament’s No.2 seed and 49th ranked Sania possibly could not have had a better opening round. Sania was kept on her toes by Martina Sucha ranked 98 and seeded No.13. Even as she tried to get behind, she either hit long or netted and she came up numerous double faults too.

Martina Sucha made the mistake of hitting the ball straight at Sania on occasions she failed to get them on her backhand. Sania dropped four games in the second set as Martina Sucha forced the match into the decider.

Sania said that it was only then that things started working for me as I began to swing a lot and played to her strength and she had fun.

Earlier Japan’s rising star Yurika Sema, ranked 273, stormed into he quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson International WTA Tennis event here with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over 115th-ranked Yulia Beygelzimer of Ukraine.

February 14, Indian armed forces that is responsible for coastal defense off the Kodiakkari coast in Indian waters seized Lankan boat with arms, ammunition, AK-57 assault riffle, a suicide belt bomb, and eight drums of liquid chemical used to make explosives. Two Indians and three Sri Lankans were in the boat have been arrested.

Rajendra Singh, Regional Commander, Coast Guard, Eastern Region said that the arrested people were not identified as LTTE militants or as a terror. Mr.Singh said that the investigation would beignby the intelligence tean of the Centre, State, Navi and coast guard.

Singh said that the boat did not have any documents ans was not registered in Tamilnadu. He said tha the fact that the catch was significant , because of the presence of suicide belt bomb in the boat. On the radar of Coast guard Ship (CGS) Ramadevi spotted the 22-foot boat. singh said that the ship’s commanding officer B.S.Lothario could identify that the boat was a powerful one and it was disguised like a normal fishing boat.

On sighting the coast guard ship, the boat equipped with five on-board and an in-board engine, tried to run away. At first, the Coast Guard officials suspected that the arms were headed for Cuddalore. The boat was trying to smuggle in arms and ammunition, including an AK 56 assault rifle with 124 rounds of ammunition, a suicide belt, five detonatos, five hand grenades and eight drums of 55 litres each of liquid chemical.

The Regional Commander of the armed forces that is responsible for coastal defense Rajendra Singh said that the arrested persons would be handed over to Tamil Nadu police.
